Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee and James Corden all dug into President Donald Trump‘s sudden and shocking decision to fire FBI Director James Comey on their respective shows Wednesday night.
Colbert broke down the firing succinctly on The Late Show. “Now while it looks like Donald Trump fired James Comey to stop the Russia investigation – that is why,” Colbert quipped. “Because, one thing we’ve learned from the last two years of Donald Trump is that what it seems like he’s doing is exactly what he’s doing. There’s no grand strategy … He’s not some wizard playing three-dimensional chess. He’s playing Hungry Hungry Hippos!”
Colbert’s monologue further dissected Comey’s unceremonious termination. He busted out his Nixon impression for the Watergate comparisons and shared a hilarious sequence in which he injected extra contemptuousness into Anderson Cooper’s eye roll at Kellyanne Conway’s defense of the Comey firing.
On Full Frontal, Samantha Bee delved into what she referred to as the latest “slow-motion cluster-fuck of impulsiveness and ineptitude that this White House is famous for.” The host cracked about Press Secretary Sean Spicer literally hiding in the bushes to avoid reporters, the cable news melee and Henry Kissinger’s surreal appearance in the Oval Office the day after Comey’s dismissal.
