Born in Fukuoka, at a very young age Koseki was sent to Kyoto where he studied initially in the Shijo manner under Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843), before moving to Osaka to study Nanga painting under Shinozaki Shochiku (1781-1851). He would once again return to Kyoto to continue his Nanga study under Oda Kaisen (1785-1862), before finally settling in Osaka, where he would remain for the rest of his life. Kono Bairei (1844-1895) was one of his most prominent students.
