ART IS DEAD …. . .. ? …

An A.I.-Generated Picture Won an Art Prize. Artists Aren’t Happy ~ NYT

“I won, and I didn’t break any rules,” the artwork’s creator says.

This year, the Colorado State Fair’s annual art competition gave out prizes in all the usual categories: painting, quilting, sculpture.

But one entrant, Jason M. Allen of Pueblo West, Colo., didn’t make his entry with a brush or a lump of clay. He created it with Midjourney, an artificial intelligence program that turns lines of text into hyper-realistic graphics.

Mr. Allen’s work, “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial,” took home the blue ribbon in the fair’s contest for emerging digital artists — making it one of the first A.I.-generated pieces to win such a prize, and setting off a fierce backlash from artists who accused him of, essentially, cheating..

~~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~
Good to hear from you Burnie.  Loved your note.
[Of course, you understand that I am only a messenger here. The article raised some hackles and I just had to send to el Jefe. ]
The bigger questions that you raise are the ones we are all interested in…”what is Art?” ….what is “God”….”Good”?”Bad”?
“Worthy”?”Not”?…..love this. Reminds me of all-night drives with old friends – (btw…that thermos of coffee and ginseng and whatever that you brewed for Kevin and I one night to keep us awake….like 45 years go (?)…. put us both to sleep – we didn’t even make it past Grand Junction…)
But I digress.
Art is art. Beauty is beauty. To put too fine a point on it is to miss the point (I paraphrase). It is fun tho.
I love getting to see your work. I love getting to see Susie’s work and process unfold in the studio…and all over our lives.
…and I love the realization that somewhere along the way we have been given the gift of creativity and the eyes to appreciate each other as “artist” in one way or the other….and to find that to be an important act in our lives. And one that we come to see as integral to our deeper selves.
Good on ya Burnie!
I have to tell you that I do love to see your work on the Report….dont think you guys understand what an important link that is to us in our expat world. Thank you.
Please come visit some time….I think you would actually love it and we would love seeing you.
Cheers
Duncan
